What inspired you to start Mixolis Projekt and how do you feel this has been received within the entertainment industry and the community around you? I just wanted something that I own and a platform where I can share my ideas the way I want them executed. I also came to a point whereby I was consulting for other people‘s projects and realised that I had a lot I could offer to the Entertainment Industry, so I created a platform that could merge my business and creative side.
I feel like it has been received very well. I am fortunate to have an amazing fan base here in London and people are always incredibly supportive of me and eagerly awaiting any projects I am a part of.
With the talk of the town right now being Mixolis Projekt and a few other brands I have seen you involved in, please could share briefly what your creative process is like when it comes to creating brands or collaborating with others? When it comes to Mixolis Projekt the creative process does not just involve me. Rosey Gold is always heavily involved and having two creative minds has been fundamental to the growth and vision of Mixolis Projekt. Without giving away too much about our creative process, one of our principles is to make sure that whatever we are involved in is of the best quality and leaves a mark. I always want to make sure that the people experience good vibes because that is what this is all about.
When it comes to other people’s brands, I believe in collaboration over competition and if there is any way I can add value and help, then I do it. I can gladly say that I am where I am because of some of the brands and events I have been part of so there is always something for both parties to benefit from through collaboration and vice versa.
Being born in Bulawayo – Zimbabwe, do you feel that your roots have inspires your DJ sound and how have you applied this into your DJ career? Yes, I believe so. The music I grew up listening to inspired the sound that I love playing today. My upbringing has also made me very humble; some people say to humble ha-ha, but I do like to treat everyone as equals and with respect. I know I am incredibly talented and I love to put on a show but I never let the hype get to my head because I know where I have come from.
Besides music, you have an immaculate style, and we see that you have collaborated with stylist Dianah Gwendu. What was the experience like for you having someone Dianah style you? Yes, Dianah Gwendu is amazing, I have known her since the early years of my DJ career which is 10+ years now. She always has me looking good and tries to educate me through her choice of outfits. I now know the different variations of colours, instead of saying something is just blue.
She has also taken away the stress of me thinking about what to wear before a gig and I can just concentrate on the music and the work ahead. I must add that Dianah is not just my stylist, she helps me a lot with the Mixolis branding. One thing I love about her when it comes to me is how she will always put my opinion first. She could have the best idea or outfit in the world but if I am not onboard or comfortable, she is not forcing it. It is fair to say without Dianah I would not be where I am as a Dj, brand, or person.
When it comes to the entertainment industry would you say style and image are important for the audience you attract or environment you go to and why? Yes, it is. How you look is especially important, it helps differentiate you from everyone else and it gives you an identity. It also makes you feel confident and shows people that you try and care about your brand!
If you were to pick one song to describe the feeling you felt playing at the Ministry of Sound with DJ Maphorisa and Uncle Waffles, what would it be and why? Felo Le Tee x Myztro – 66! Because this song brings a different energy and excitement which is exactly how I felt on that night! Being booked at Ministry of Sound is amazing but it is even better when you are part of a top tier line-up.
Given a time machine, what words of encouragement would you advise young Mixolis about the future of the music industry in the UK? Do not under estimate yourself, start your own brand as early as possible and work with Dianah & Rosey ASAP!
