During our conversation with Alex, she shared her testament of how she entered the fashion industry. At 18, she was inspired by iconic fashion houses like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Hermès. She dreamed of seeing her name in the high fashion world. That instant ignited a passionate drive, setting her on the course to transform her aspirations into actuality.

Join us as we delve into the world of Alexandra Novacki, an innovator who continues to evolve and redefine the realm of haute couture. Her artistic vision and fearless approach promise a future filled with awe-inspiring creations that will leave an indelible mark on the fashion industry.

Munashe: Who is Alex Novacki ?

Alex: I am a woman who loves to feel empowered by what I wear; I describe myself as someone who finds joy in fashion and in watching people feel the best version of themselves in what I make.

Munashe: Where does Alex originate from? Alex: I am originally from a small town in Derbyshire called Chapel-en-le-frith. Certainly not the fashion capital of the world. My heritage is Polish, but my surname gives that away. Munashe: What is your first fashion memory?

Alex: I realised I wanted to contribute to the fashion industry and foster my passion when I visited Paris at the age of 18 years. I remember walking through the city and seeing classical artistry by Alexander McQueen and many other designers. A sudden feeling of I also want my name up there on a door entrance befell me. Since then, I wanted to go step by step to making this a reality.

Munashe: How would you describe your personal fashion style? Who inspires it? (If any inspirations at all?)

Alex: My fashion taste is uncomplicated, blending eye-catching items with finely tailored pieces – especially a well-fitted blazer, which I adore. Masculine looks make up my personal style. Fashion and styling are not just about wearing coordinating combinations to me. It is also about wearing things which make people remember me. I currently have a chunky gold chain against this black top. I know you will remember this look because it is the first you commented on before we exchanged greetings. That is the power of a statement piece. It greets the other person before you open your mouth to say anything. Makeup is also a fun way to change aesthetic, I love to experiment with my glam team to make original looks.

Munashe: We are fascinated by your avant-garde, surrealist style in your couture designs. Who or what inspires it?

Alex: I admire Daniel Roseberry’s work for Schiaparelli; it is a runway show I always tune in to every season for inspiration. McQueen’s work was masterful, and designers like me can dive deeper into designs on an emotional and personal level when looking back on his work.

Munashe: How would you describe the current British fashion aesthetic?

Alex: The British aesthetic is historically an array of tailoring. Saville row tailors and luxury names like Burberry are examples of this notable style. Burberry has consistently provided tailored trench coats and jackets – an ideal fashion choice in windy and damp weather in Britain, a staple to my own wardrobe also.

Munashe: What is your design process? How do you work from concept to construction?

Alex: I have an unusual method; I do not follow the traditional design process. I start my process with how I would like to present the collection on the runway. I take inspiration from the feeling I want to create for the audience – after that, I start designing. Most fashion designers sketch garment ideas first, with the runway presentation concepts coming last. It works for some; it does not work for me, and this makes a difference between us all.

“I am a woman who loves to feel empowered by what I wear.”

Alexandra Novacki, fashion designer

Munashe: There is so much pressure for designers to come out with their collections every season. What advice would you give young designers just starting and hoping to make it in the industry?

Alex: Perfecting your process and looking out for new incoming patterns, fabrics, and trends are all important. You are not in competition with any other designer but yourself. For that, it is essential to refine your skills, your process, and your knowledge.

Munashe: In less than five words, what is your advice to aspiring and upcoming designers?

Alex: “Accept your individuality.” There will always be those who will try to push you down, just look the other way and walk straight past.

Munashe: What would you want to be if you were not a fashion designer?

Alex: I would do something in sport for sure. I had a previous life as a track cyclist and have a highly competitive streak in me.

Munashe: Who is your favourite runway model so far?

Alex: Shalom Harlow is an all-time favourite of mine.
